FNR-194 Food Plots for White-Tailed Deer
نویسنده
چکیده
Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service • West Lafayette, Indiana The establishment and maintenance of food plots can be a component of any wildlife management plan. When used in conjunction with other habitat management techniques, food plots are useful for attracting wildlife. However, landowners may have unrealistic expectations about the utility and function of food plots. Food plots are not a replacement for habitat management. They can enhance your property for wildlife by increasing the numbers that frequent your property at different times of the year. Food plots can also be a supplemental food source during harsh weather conditions when they are a part of a comprehensive wildlife management plan.

Use of Deer Repellents to Preserve Wildlife Food Plots for Game Birds
Food plots are a vital element for the survival of game bird species such as bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) on Fort Riley Military Installation in Kansas. However, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) tend to eat the sorghum when it starts to ripen in September and continue feeding on it through November and December, often leaving no food for the quail during the winter. We conduct...
متن کاملFood Plots for White-tailed Deer
Food plots may increase the value of hunting leases, make deer more visible for viewing opportunities, and improve the diet quality of deer. However, planting food plots is not a replacement for poor habitat management. Maintaining deer densities within the carrying capacity of the habitat, sound livestock grazing management, and maintaining quality habitat should be the first priorities of any...
متن کاملFactors Affecting Deer Use of Hybrid Corn in Winter
We compared white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virctinianus) use of 15 field corn (Zea mays) hybrids grown in food plots near 3 deer wintering areas in southwestern Minnesota, 1987-88. Physical and morphological characteristics of corn varied significantly among sites, subplots and among hybrids. Deer use of hybrids was significantly different and 5 use groups of hybrids were identified. A significa...
متن کاملDeer herbivory reduces web-building spider abundance by simplifying forest vegetation structure
Indirect ecological effects are a common feature of ecological systems, arising when one species affects interactions among two or more other species. We examined how browsing by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) indirectly affected the abundance and composition of a web-building spider guild through their effects on the structure of the ground and shrub layers of northern hardwood for...
متن کاملComparison of visual-based helicopter and fixed-wing forward- looking infrared surveys for counting white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus
Aerial surveys using direct counts of animals are commonly used to estimate deer abundance. Forward-looking infrared (FLIR) technology is increasingly replacing traditional methods such as visual observation from helicopters. Our goals were to compare fixed-wing FLIR and visual, helicopter-based counts in terms of relative bias, influence of snow cover and cost. We surveyed five plots: four 41....
